The same attention to materials, conditions, and pacing that keeps you safe on the water keeps you from ruining a year’s worth of work at the planer.

This isn’t poetic metaphor—not entirely. It’s practical, repeatable wisdom that transfers directly from one discipline to another. And after years of noticing these patterns, I think it’s worth writing down.

Before You Start: The Plan

Nobody should hike into unfamiliar terrain without knowing where they’re going. You don’t have to be rigid about it—the best trails have room for exploration and adaptation—but you need a route. You need to know the distance, the elevation change, where the water sources are, what the weather forecast says, and where you can bail out if things go wrong. You need a map.

I learned this the hard way. Years ago, I convinced myself that going “off-trail” in a general direction was more adventurous than following a marked path. It wasn’t. It was just inefficient and stressful. I spent two hours bushwhacking through tag alder to cover what would have been a forty-minute walk on an established trail. The difference between being lost and being found is often just planning.

Then comes the route: how will you get there? What’s the sequence of operations? Which surfaces need to be flat before you can machine other surfaces? Where will glue-ups happen, and in what order? What tooling do you need? What’s your timeline?

I sketch plans on paper—full-size drawings when I can, smaller scaled drawings when the piece is large. I make a cutlist. I think through the milling sequence. I identify potential problems before they become expensive mistakes. And yes, things change. Boards have grain patterns you didn’t expect. Joinery fits tighter than anticipated. Weather delays lumber delivery. But you start with a plan. You know where you’re going.

The makers who constantly start projects they don’t finish, who find themselves halfway through with materials that don’t work, who discover midway through that the proportions are all wrong—those makers are hiking without a map. They’re wasting effort. They’re making the work harder than it needs to be.

Before you build, know what you’re building. Know why. Know how. Know where you might turn back.

Packing Light: The Question of Tools

The first time I paddled the Boundary Waters was with someone who had gear for every conceivable scenario. Extra paddles, backup cooking equipment, two tents, medical supplies for disasters that hadn’t happened yet. His pack was enormous. Mine was half the size.

We paddled the same distance the first day. By the end, he was exhausted. I wasn’t. The difference wasn’t strength or fitness—it was weight.

He learned what experienced paddlers already know: every ounce matters. You carry what you need and nothing else. Not because you’re depriving yourself, but because extra weight is a tax on every single stroke. It adds up over hours. It leaves you depleted when you need to be sharp.

This is where I see woodworkers stumble most consistently. They accumulate tools.

I meet makers who have seven different chisels when they need three. Multiple hand planes that do almost the same job. Jigs for operations they perform once a year. Specialty sanders for situations that rarely arise. Table saws, miter saws, track saws, and band saws when a couple would do. They’re not bad people—they’re usually optimistic, curious, always thinking the next tool will unlock something. But they’re carrying too much weight.

The workshop becomes cluttered. The workflow gets complicated. They spend time searching for the right tool instead of making. They spend money on things that compound slowly into real debt. And more subtly, they spend mental energy managing equipment instead of focusing on the work itself.

I’m not advocating for minimalism as a life philosophy. I’m advocating for it as a practical efficiency. Use the best tools you can afford. Not the most tools—the best ones. Buy quality over quantity. A good handplane is more useful than three mediocre ones. A sharp chisel outlasts and outperforms five dull ones. One excellent clamp that you can rely on is worth more than a dozen cheap clamps that don’t hold square.

The Minnesota outdoors teaches this naturally. You can’t carry much. Everything matters. A good knife is better than three bad ones. One reliable shelter is better than two questionable ones. A high-quality sleeping bag is an investment, not a luxury. When weight is a constraint, you think clearly about value.

Bring your core tools. Know them intimately. Keep them sharp, tuned, and clean. Buy the next piece of equipment only when you’ve genuinely exhausted what you have. And when you do add something, make sure it’s the right thing—not just the next thing.

This approach does something else too: it forces you to develop skill with the tools you have. You can’t rely on the next new gadget to solve your problems. You have to become excellent with what’s in your hand.

Reading the Material: Understanding Grain and Growth

A good hiker learns to read terrain. You look at the landscape and understand what it’s telling you. A ridge line suggests older, more stable rock. Certain plant species indicate moisture levels. The way snow sits on a slope tells you about wind patterns and avalanche risk. You read the land, and the land tells you what’s possible and what’s dangerous.

Wood is the same—it’s a material with a history built into it. Every piece of wood you pick up is telling you a story about how it grew, where the stress is, what it wants to do.

Grain direction is the obvious element. Wood moves in the direction of grain—it shrinks more along the grain than across it. If you ignore grain direction, your boards will cup, warp, and potentially crack. You have to read the grain before you start milling. You have to plan your joinery around it. You have to think about how the piece will move seasonally.

But there’s more. The wood’s color tells you about density and age. Tighter grain typically means slower growth and denser wood. Variations in color can indicate where branches were, where there’s stress, where the wood was exposed to weather. Knots aren’t just defects—they’re stress points. They’re places where the tree diverted resources to something that doesn’t belong. You can hide them or you can acknowledge them as part of the design.

Some woods are more stable than others. Ash moves more than maple. Pine moves more than cherry. Walnut is generally stable, but it can develop checking as it dries. Understanding these characteristics isn’t academic—it’s practical knowledge that determines whether a project will stay flat and square five years later.

I spend time with every piece of wood before I mill it. I look at both faces. I feel the grain with my hand. I get a sense of how the tree was positioned when it was growing. I think about where the medullary rays are running. I consider whether this board wants to be the top of a table or the leg of a chair. I let the wood tell me what it’s suited for.

This doesn’t always happen quickly. Sometimes I have to live with a board for a while. I might flip it over multiple times before I see what it’s meant to be. But once I understand the material, the decisions become clearer. I’m not fighting the wood—I’m working with it.

The alternative is rushing. You get the board, you think it looks nice, you start milling without really understanding it. Then the wood does what it wanted to do all along, and you’re frustrated. But the problem wasn’t the wood—it was that you didn’t read it carefully enough.

This goes for all materials. Hardware should be appropriate for the application. Glues have different strengths and setting times—you need to match them to the job. Finishes need to match the environment and the wood’s character. Nothing is neutral. Everything has properties. Read them.

When to Keep Going and When to Turn Back

There’s a particular kind of hiking mistake that happens when you’re committed to a plan. You’ve set out to walk ten miles and summit a ridge, and you’re going to do it. The weather turns, but you’re already halfway there—might as well continue. Your legs are tired, but you’re too far in to turn around. You convince yourself that the trail is worse on the map than it is in reality.

And sometimes you’re right. Sometimes you push through and accomplish what you set out to do, and it feels great.

But sometimes, about three miles from the trailhead with the light failing and the weather deteriorating, you realize you made the wrong call. You were supposed to turn around two hours ago.

The smartest outdoors people I know aren’t the ones who make the most ambitious trips—they’re the ones who turn back most often. They don’t see it as failure. They see it as reading the conditions and responding appropriately. Better to hike this route another day than to spend a night in the cold you weren’t prepared for.

Woodworking projects go sideways. It happens.

You’re halfway through and you realize the wood is checking. You’re at the glue-up and everything is binding tighter than you expected. You’re finishing and the grain is raising in a way you didn’t anticipate. You’re installing hardware and nothing is lining up correctly.

This is the moment when makers often make a critical mistake. They push harder. They convince themselves they can fix it. They soldier on.

Sometimes that works out. But more often, it doesn’t. The piece ends up compromised. The joinery is weak because you forced it. The finish is uneven. The proportions are off in a way that bothers you every time you look at it. And it took twice as long as it should have because you were fighting the work instead of stopping and reassessing.

I’ve learned to turn back. If I’m halfway through a project and I realize the approach isn’t working, I stop. I take the piece apart if I need to. I mill new stock if the current material isn’t cooperating. I redesign the joinery if it’s not going to work as planned. Yes, this adds time. But it adds it to the front end, not the back end. It’s better to spend an extra week here than to spend the rest of my life looking at a mediocre piece.

This is also where experience matters. The more you build, the faster you can recognize when something isn’t working. A beginner might not realize until it’s too late. An experienced maker feels it sooner and acts accordingly.

Turning back isn’t giving up. It’s making an intelligent decision based on changing conditions. It’s the same decision-making that keeps you alive on the trail. And it produces better work.

Delayed Gratification and the Long Build

There’s a particular satisfaction that comes from completing a long trail. Not just the relief of being back at the car—the actual moment of achievement when you reach the destination. It feels different from smaller accomplishments. The effort was distributed over hours. You were uncomfortable multiple times. You doubted yourself on a section in the middle. But you kept going, and now you’re here.

This satisfaction is disproportionate to the difficulty. Walking ten miles is objectively easier than many things in life. But because it required sustained effort over time, because it forced you to be uncomfortable, the completion feels significant.

Woodworking, when done right, creates the same dynamic.

A quick project—a cutting board, a simple box—can be satisfying in a different way. It’s complete understanding. You can see the whole project from start to finish. It’s done in a day or two. That’s valuable.

But a major piece—a dining table, a cabinet, a complex desk—that requires weeks or months of work. That’s a different kind of satisfaction. You live with the project. You develop a relationship with it. You have setbacks and solutions. You experience multiple seasons of different challenges—milling, joinery, assembly, finishing. By the time it’s done, you’ve learned something about yourself as a maker. You’ve been uncomfortable. You’ve doubted. But you finished.

And that delayed gratification changes how you value the piece. A table that took two weeks of dedicated work gets treated differently than a table that took two days. The owner understands the time involved. The maker appreciates it more.

This is increasingly important as the world accelerates. Everything seems optimized for immediate results. Digital art can be generated in seconds. Furniture can be shipped overnight. The culture pushes toward speed.

But some things are better when they’re slow. A relationship takes time. Understanding develops over repeated exposure. Skill requires years of practice. Mastery requires decades. You can’t rush it.

Woodworking projects that extend over time teach this. They force you to slow down. They create space for genuine mastery. They prove, empirically, that delayed gratification is more valuable than instant satisfaction.

I try to always have one major project in progress. Something that will take months. Something that will require me to develop new skills or refine existing ones. It doesn’t matter if it’s for a client or for myself. The timeline is the point. The commitment matters.

How Minnesota Made My Aesthetic

I didn’t grow up wanting to build ornate furniture. I grew up wanting to exist in the North. To move through the landscape efficiently. To have equipment that worked without calling attention to itself. To understand that durability is more valuable than decoration.

This directly influences how I design and build.

Minnesota’s landscape isn’t baroque. It’s not overstated. It’s honest. The lakes are clear and functional. The forests are dense without being cluttered. The rocks are ancient and simple. The wildlife is pragmatic—nothing is wasted on unnecessary flourish.

This translates to the work. I’m drawn to natural materials shown in their natural state. Wood grain is a feature, not something to hide. Joinery should be visible if it’s good joinery—it’s beautiful because it solves a problem. Form follows function. Nothing is included that doesn’t do something.

I’m skeptical of ornament. Not hostile to it—there’s a place for it. But it should earn its place. It should be there because the piece needs it, not because tradition says so. It should enhance the function or reveal something about the material.

Proportions matter more to me than decoration. A table that’s proportioned perfectly—where the height feels right, where the overhang is generous but not excessive, where the legs seem like they’re exactly where they should be—that table is beautiful whether it’s decorated or not.

I’m influenced by the Shakers, who built furniture in a region culturally adjacent to Minnesota. They understood that simplicity well-executed is more powerful than complexity poorly executed. They understood that the best design is invisible—you don’t notice the design, you notice how well the piece works.

And there’s something about living in Minnesota that reinforces this. The weather is serious here. The outdoors is beautiful but not forgiving. You respect the material conditions. You don’t waste anything. You build things to last. You take pride in competence.

These values show up in the furniture. Clean lines. Natural finishes. Joinery that’s strong because it’s smart, not because it’s overdone. Materials that age honestly. Pieces that work better after ten years than they did when they were new, because the wood has stabilized and the finishes have developed character.

This isn’t a philosophy I adopted intellectually. It emerged from decades of living in this place and moving through its landscape. The outdoors shaped how I see materials, how I understand durability, what I value in design.
